Am I Eligible for Divorce in Florida?
One of the parties must be a resident of Florida for 6 months before filing a dissolution of marriage petition (unless they are a member of the military) and the marriage is "irretrievably broken."

Each spouse has a responsibility to financially support their children in accordance with their income and the children's needs. Ordinarily, the obligation to support your child ends when that child reaches age 18, marries, is emancipated, joins the armed forces or dies.

How Long Does a Divorce Take?
In some cases, the parties are quickly able to reach an agreement on all of the issues involved. Contested cases involve more litigation in order to resolve issues and come to an agreement. When the parties cannot come to an agreement, a trial before the judge may be necessary.

The objective of dissolution of marriage is to resolve these issues so that you and your spouse can move on with the rest of your lives. Some of these issues that must be resolved for a final dissolution are:
Dividing up the marital assets, property and debt: who gets what based on what idea. It’s not as easy as it seems many times.
Alimony awards: it isn’t always ordered by the judge and there are many types of alimony.
Child custody: “time sharing” is the new term to express both spouse’s rights to being a parent and meant to take some of the bite out of who “wins”.
Child support: the Florida legislature determined how much it takes to raise children, and the lawyers fight as to dividing up each parties’ share of that amount determined by your elected officials.
These are only some of the issues that a divorce seeks to resolve. The issues, however, can be very complex to resolve. You may ask: “Well, if there are rules on how to do it, why can’t I just follow these rules?”
