When I was in college, two of my friends from back in high school were prosecuted for serious felony charges. These young men were selling marijuana and it turned into a big case, which resulted in both of them going to prison in their early 20s. At that time, I was already set on going to law school, but their cases changed my perspective a lot when it came to criminal law.

I was surprised at the severity of their sentences because they were charged with nonviolent crimes related to selling a drug that has been decriminalized and/or legalized in over 32 states (as of 2019). Therefore, I decided to take as many criminal law classes as I could at the University of Miami School of Law.  Upon graduation, I was determined to work as a prosecutor at the State Attorney’s Office. I knew this would be a great way to learn how criminal cases are investigated and why certain defendants get better plea bargains than others.

After being a prosecutor for two years, I learned a lot more than I thought I would. I was able to to form a solid roadmap of how criminal cases flow through the courts after working with many police officers, investigators, paralegals, and other prosecutors. During my time with the State, I handled hundreds of criminal cases such as DUI, Petit Theft, Possession of Cannabis, and Driving While License Suspended. But I felt more and more out of place as time went by. I knew that defense work was my true calling. I was eager to use my skills to help people who made mistakes like my friends from my high school, so that is what I decided to do.

Now, when I defend a client who faces criminal charges, I know how high the stakes are. I also know that a dismissal is the best-case scenario and that is always my number one goal. Dismissals can occur when certain evidence is suppressed or if the prosecutor is convinced that the case is a dud. When a dismissal does not seem possible, then it is time to negotiate with professionalism and confidence. In the case that my client is not comfortable with a proposed plea offer from the State, then I aggressively prepare for trial.

I have handled more than 20 jury trials in my legal career, all of which were related to criminal offenses. Thus, I have seen many angles from many different types of attorneys. I have learned that preparation and clarity are crucial when speaking to the jury. Further, my theatre background helps me keep jurors interested and my psychology background assists me in picking the right jurors for the case.
